This jack is all the way up. The tire is still touching the ground
EDIT: the 30 inch lift rally jack, typically used for this, left with the Yaris and has not yet returned. Ya bunch of smartasses
![]() 02/25/2014 at 12:54 |

Bro, you can't even lift.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 12:54 |

Blocks of wood, 2x4's cut into 6 inch pieces and stack them up, put it on the jack cup. Just be careful and make sure placement is good

Move jack closer to wheel?
![]() 02/25/2014 at 12:56 |

"All the way jacked up"
instead of that song
"all the way turnt up"
I prefer my new version, it's grammatically correct too.

There is this jack, I forget the name of it, but its supposed to provide a pretty Hi Lift....
![]() 02/25/2014 at 12:56 |

this, 4x4's work good too
![]() 02/25/2014 at 12:56 |

Get a taller jack.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 12:57 |
|
1. the weight of that truck likely exceeds that 1.5 ton jack.
2. that's a low profile jack made for lowered cars. Get a taller one from harbor freight. They're on sale for $80.
3. Nice ranger, bro.

Just lay on your back and work on it from there?
![]() 02/25/2014 at 12:59 |

Um. Are the two front tires completely different, or is the camera playing tricks, or are you in the process of a tire change?
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:00 |

Yeah, the wider the better I've found. I used 2x6's when I did it.

jack under suspension joint to hub?...will the weight break the joint?

It's not every day that you see a huge BSA sticker on the bottom of a skid plate.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:03 |

I too have used wood with good result. In fact I usually put a piece of wood in between to prevent metal on metal contact.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:04 |

Happens to me all the time with the Bug cause the tires are so big.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:04 |

save your money and buy a quality jack. Don't waste cash on harbor freight if you want to use it more than 15 times.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:05 |

How do you not have a Hi-Lift Jack?
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:06 |
|
Yeah, I usually only use wood when jacking up an engine so I don't damage the oil pan, but I've needed to jack up the car to put the jack stands higher once before, didn't have a higher jack, and I don't see myself using one since all of my cars are pretty low, wouldn't crawl underneath the car or do it without a tire underneath it to catch it if it fell though.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:06 |

yo dawg, I herd u leik jacks so we put a jack under your jack so u can lift while u lift
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:08 |

sorry in advance
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:09 |

yea, i tend to if i have some around. I was using some old wood i found in the backyard for a bit, the jack started eating into it and I figured it was time to stop using that lol.

Most jack manufacturers use similar castings and Chinese manufacturers. When harbor freight is concerned, I use a rule of thumb that if it has more than three moving parts, I probably shouldn't get it. The only thing that actually does any work on a jack is the piston, and that's replaceable. The metal won't fracture and the welds are generally good. Always use jack stands and you should never have an issue. My HF jack has outlasted 3 Craftsman jacks and one Torin jack that I've used in 5 years. Anecdote, I know, but HF isn't horrible.

Ah, you must not yet be familiar with my truck
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:15 |
|
Agreed. I have a lifted truck so I pretty much always need a piece of wood. I always jack with tires on and immediately rest it on jack stands.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:17 |
|
Yeah, I don't trust jacks to hold a car up for more then a good minute or two before it decides it wants to give up. Heard too many stories of a jack failing on people, plus my dad also decided to tell the story of how one of his friends died when the Corvette he was working on fell on him, while I was underneath my 944.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:18 |
|
Yeah the piston is what always craps out or starts leaking entirely too soon. There are obviously some concerns with cheap low quality chinese steel, but I wouldn't buy Harbor Freight because of the piston. Some reputable companies that sell high quality jacks include; Milwaukee Hydraulic, Norco, Hein Werner - by no means a complete list.

Get a smaller truck.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:24 |
|
Pretty much this. Ended up using a 4 inch thick cinder block
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:25 |
|
Yep. I keep a piece of 2x4" under one side of the rear seat of my Cherokee (factory bottle jack is under the other side). I swear the spot was MADE for that as it's almost totally necessary to safely lift a Jeep like that.
I've always preferred to use a piece of wood between the jack and the ground, seems to give the base of the jack something better to bite into than concrete.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:28 |
|
Jack is a 2-ton, truck is under 3900 lbs. and thank you
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:29 |
|
If you had left the little wheels on the jack, you would have had a couple of inches.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:29 |
|
NO
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:30 |
|
That's the key to all of it. Never work on a car without stands.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:32 |
|
No tricks, you nailed it. I'm switching over from the smaller (26") transport tires to the bigger (35") competition tires
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:36 |
|
Yeah, I always go use jack stands that are rated for double the weigh of the car I'm using them on as well. I'm just super paranoid and really don't want a car to fall on me, that would suck.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:38 |
|
hell yeah it would.
The good part is I can fit under 2 out of our 3 cars without the jack or stands. It's tight and wouldnt be comfortable, but neither of those 2 could kill me.
My Milan on the other hand is way too low and I got jackstand happy on that one lol
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:38 |
|
Little wheels no like soft, sandy race courses
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:39 |
|
Not too bad then, easy to do oil changes.
All of my cars on the other hand, happen to be low to the ground. I have an unhealthy obsession with coupes and hot hatches, so as a result I own 6, 3 ton jack stands, and 2, 2 ton jacks.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:40 |
|
that floor looks to be concrete, so I don't know what you saying here :)
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:42 |
|
OK, OK. How about you dig a trench for the tire, effectively lowering the truck, therefore making your jack that much taller?
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:43 |
|
yea, the milan is the only concern, the Jeep Commander is almost like the truck above, the jack gets the tire maybe 1-2 inches off the ground lol. And the 68 Montego has a shocking amount of ground clearance. Though (knocks on wood) I haven't had much reason to be under it since I've owned it. Thankfully.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:46 |
|
Wow really? Not bad man keep that maintenance up then it'll treat you right. It sucks because I've discovered I actually have somewhat of a phobia of being crushed, not really claustrophobic, just fear of being crushed, so as a result when it was warmer out I would just spend all day getting comfortable underneath my car, whether or not I was actively working on something, ended up learning an absolute shit ton about it though so that was good.

My biggest laugh of the day!
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:51 |

Oooh, oooh, another idea: what if you let all the air out of the tire? You could squish it a bit and then it'd clear the floor.
I've probably got more ideas here, and I'll let you have them for free. Let me know if you need them!
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:56 |

It's the jack we use for desert racing
![]() 02/25/2014 at 13:57 |

Yeah I've spent a whole lot more time under the hood than under the car for the 68. Just haven't had much to do down there. I prefer it up there anyhow haha. I need to get under it this spring for a serious clean out though, in 1968 they didn't really have a way to get rid of gunk in the motor. So the PCV takes the gunk out of the valve cover and leads it through a hose to...you guessed it...the road. It basically hocks a lugey on the ground when it has some gunk lol. Which means I need to clean off the excess under the car.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 14:07 |
|
Oh shit, that is random, but smart at the same time I suppose. Hell, clean everything up down there, and while you are at it get an undercoating done.
Hopefully once I'm done with my clutch change I can spend some more time under the hood of mine, I prefer to just mess with the engine, plus it's got a hell of a view down there.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 14:07 |
|
Use blocks of wood. works great. Lifted up a 94 f350 with em no problem.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 15:06 |

Probably no undercoat. but hopefully the floorpans get repaired this summer.
Going to do a thorough cleaning. From there on out it's cosmetic upgrades mainly. I have to get the floor pans patched, then the car painted. Then carpet, new headliner, new rear deck. Then new wheels/tires, that may be pushed forward though depending on need lol. and THEN I get to put on nice newer Ford Racing Valve Covers and Air Cleaner. It IS a project car lol. Just a very fast and loud drivable one.

Now that is a gorgeous car man, I like. And a pretty clean engine bay for its age as well. How long you had it?

Thank you! about 2 years now, though the engine upgrades all came last year.
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake
4 Barrel Holley Carb (400 CFM) ...it was originally a 2 barrel
True dual Flowmaster Super 44 exhaust
Edelbrock air cleaner
this is how it looked under there when I got it:
Enjoy the sounds

You could always Orlove it for easy access to the wheels.
Don't do that, that's a terrible idea.

We go all out with our Scout projects.
Sad thing is even with this truck as one of our scout projects I can't get kids to join. I'll get one or two to show up to a couple meetings, they realize it's more work than staying home playing video games, and quit. Nevermind the fact that I'm offering things like trips to Vegas, races across Nevada, traveling all over the place for rallies, and such. *mutter mutter off mutter porch mutter old timey swear*

I'd lie if I knew what you were talking about when it comes to carbed engines, I have never owned/worked on one before, but I do know more barrels+Edelbrock means some good stuff, and you did some magic on that engine man, definitely an accomplishment so far. I'll listen to that engine when I get a chance (At work right now, no speakers). Do you DD it?
![]() 02/26/2014 at 08:41 |
|
Haha, hell no. I dd a 07 mercury milan v. Montego has no ac, no heat, not even power brakes lol oh and then there the roughly 4 mpg haha, exaggerated but yea its terrible mpg.
Yea its come a long way on 2 years. We'll see how far the budget will let me take it!

The edit on this is priceless lol

Oh damn haha. Speaking of brakes you planning on doing a disc brake conversion, or are you trying to keep it stock? And yeah that is what sucks about old V8's, absolutely horrid gas mileage.
Just keep posting up about it, it is definitely and interesting car
